Is John McCain too old to be president? In a country that most companies make anybody over 65 years old retire here is a guy who is 71 and running for the most difficult job in the world. Can he handle it? As I watch his gaffes, his misstatements, his lack of knowledge of simple but very serious worldwide matters like what is the difference between a Sunni and a Shiite and what countries actually border Iraq, or speaking about Czechoslovakia like it still exists or stating that Putin is the president of Germany or that he was proud be the Republican nominee for the United States of Arizona, I grow nervous. These gaffes are quite scary but let’s face it everyone makes mistakes, but Senator McCain’s are seemingly getting more and more frequent. Some of his handlers write it off as the stress of a long arduous campaign but isn’t being the president of the United States long, arduous and stressful. When asked about his age McCain usually jokes about it or directs the questioner to talk to his mother who is now 95, what he doesn’t say is that his father died at 71 and his grandfather at 60. And a worrisome footnote to this is that recent research at Duke University reports that 1 in every 3 Americans over 70 suffer some memory loss.
Another problem associated with his old age is his lack of knowledge of computers or the Internet. It is widely speculated that he has never gone on line, when asked about that, he answered, “My people go on line for me” and when his deputy campaign director Mark Soohoo was asked about McCain’s computer knowledge he answered, “You don’t necessarily have to use a computer to understand how it shapes the country.” You have to shake your head at verbiage like that. I just can’t imagine a president not having a little knowledge about a medium that is changing the world daily. I have nothing against senior citizens, I think they are invaluable, I just don’t know if America is ready for a grandfather president who is set in the past and would add nothing new in this modern age not to mention to stay engaged in a very fluid worldwide modern society...
This piece on McCain is the change I was looking for here. Thanks Charles.
That's not the point actually. I liked the intro of the ad that says it all for McCain's age. I hope the video stays on Youtube because a few disappeared because of copyright claims.
The world’s superpower cannot afford to have a president stuck in the old age leading the whole whole forward in this 21st century!
Give the youthful senator a chance.
Vote for change, vote for Obama!
Reagan became president at the age of 70 and held the position with remarkable alacrity for two terms.
The presidential election is for a term of 4 years. If McCain wins and hold the position for a full term and steps out, he would be retiring 3 years younger than Reagan.
Being physically young is no guarantee for other qualities expected of a good president.
John, give Obama a chance? Not in this day and age, sorry. Maybe if the world wasn’t so messed up we could afford to take a chance.
They say we will be plunged into a huge depression during an Obama turn, and perhaps that’s what so many foreigners want for this country.
Every world citizen has to be concerned of the November elections. It has a bearing on every one on earth, whether he/she is a US citizen or not. It so important to have the right man elected.
Obama is trying to match along with everybody else learning and using the technology changing the world everyday.
McCain is instead relying on ”his people” and stuck in the olden times. Unbelievable that somebody stuck in the old times would comfortably LEAD others in this fast changing world.
The choice is yours: stay back in the old age or embrace life changing tech future improving and changing everyday lives!
